Dr. Adilia Silva

Clinical Psychologist based in Kensington, Johannesburg

Being in psychotherapy is like a dance.

To experience an effective dance together, we (the therapist and the client) must be in tune with and sensitive to the nuances of the music as well as its structure. If we are too eager, we may step on each other’s toes or dance out of rhythm.

On the other hand, if our efforts are half-hearted, the dance will not be experienced to its fullest potential. To be able to psycho-therapeutically dance together, we need to stretch out our arms, trust each other, hold on, take a few steps and be sensitively guided by the nuances of the music.

As we begin to feel more secure, spontaneity and courage will determine when we take that leap of faith so that more steps are taken and the dance becomes more complex. This experience holds the potential to embrace new paths of vision.
